Home Cleaning
Professionals classify blood stains as relatively simple compared to animal urine or markers. The specialists at Mister Cleaner handle them successfully. However, the standard reaction of upholstered furniture owners when they find a blood stain on the upholstery is not to call in the experts, but to wash it quickly.
How to do it correctly and efficiently?
If you do not wish to call in the specialists, here are some simple guidelines:
- A wet blood stain should be dried with a napkin so that it does not become blurry or spread;
- A fresh stain can be removed with clean cold water (hot water causes it to curl and bond with the fabric fibers).
- After moistening a soft, clean sponge, rinse the blood until it disappears. If pigment remains, prepare a suitable detergent solution for the type of upholstery and gently rub it over the stain.
- Rinse with clean cold water, dry with a napkin, and let it dry. Then check and, if necessary, repeat the procedure again.
IMPORTANT: Test any cleaning and detergent composition on an inconspicuous area of the sofa upholstery. What if it discolors the fabric, leaves streaks, or destroys the textile structure? The wrong choice of means can ruin the furniture and you'll have to deal with it too much.
- Liquid ammonia works well on blood in textiles. For cleaning, you should turn it into an aqueous solution by mixing 200 g of water and 1 tablespoon of ammonia. Moisten the stain with such a solution and gently rub it with a sponge;
- An old recipe gives good results: add 2 tablespoons of ammonia to 0.5 liters of an aqueous soap solution;
- The internet has recommendations for removing blood stains from textile upholstery with hydrogen peroxide. Yes, you can try it. Don’t forget the bleaching properties of the substance. Before rinsing a blood stain with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide, check the upholstery fabric's reaction to this agent in a discreet area;
- Crushed aspirin in powder form, diluted with water to a paste-like state, gives good results. It should be applied to the stain and gently rubbed;
- You can use talcum powder, more commonly known as baby powder. If you don't have it, replace it with flour. Sprinkle the blood stain with the powder, sprinkle with water. After drying, the talcum powder is removed from the upholstery with a vacuum cleaner;
- Glycerin heated to 37 degrees, applied with a sponge or napkin to a dry blood stain and washed off after 15 minutes with cold water, works well for such contamination;
Why is it not recommended to remove blood stains from furniture with amateur methods?
The reason lies in the chemical composition of blood. First, it is made up of proteins. When trying to remove a blood stain from textile upholstery with hot water, the protein coagulates and bonds tightly with the fabric fibers. For the same reason, a steam generator cannot be used to remove traces of blood.
IMPORTANT: When removing blood stains, use only cold water and detergent solutions.
Secondly, erythrocytes contain the pigment hemoglobin. It contains iron, which gives blood stains an oxidized color. It can be difficult to remove the final trace of blood on white fabric, and on colored fabric, it is less noticeable.
